Best Of Night:
The obvious best of night were Crystal Bowersox and Lilly Scott; not necessarily in that order. Their performances were closely followed in caliber by Soibhan Magnus who hit a masterful high note at the end of her Aretha song; however, a good scream does not a great performance make. At the end of the day, Simon gave the edge to Crystal; but during actual feedback, their seemed to be a higher level of energy in the Judge's praise for Lilly.
Worst Of Night:
It would be nice to say that none of the girls fell short, however there is no denying that the weakest link was Didi Benami. Her choice of song was a little too soulful for Randy and did not play to her strengths; for him. Simon referred to it as "a disaster".
Healey also earned a "no love" from the judges with her rendition of "insert song name here". It's not really that she sang the song badly; I believe it's more the fact that we expect her to fail (as she is obviously a fodder candidate) us don't give her credit where credit is due. Case in point: she practically zero airtime for her "defense". On the other hand, Katie Stevens (who also performed mediocre Lee, yet way below expectation) got a huge amount of airtime in which to "lay down". The sad point to make is that this is two weeks in a row that Katie has extremely underperformed.
The last of the worst was Lacey Brown. She sang "kiss me" based on personal desire as well as Kara did warranties recommendation; however, after two seasons worth of Lacey plus we assume a year of pursuing her craft while not on the American Idol stage Lacey was not able to bring anything even slightly resembling a star presence or performance. It sounded great, but if you are thinking that Lacey is top 5 -- fuggeddaboutit.
Fashion Prize:
Michelle Delamor takes the prize this week with phenomenal ease. Sporting a jean under dress combination, with bolero pleather jacket and half gloves, references to Vera Wang we cast about, but the camera could find her. Great outfit.
Fashion Flubb:
This week, Lacey was perhaps a LITTLE too eighties around the shoulders. Just saying. Siobhan, of course, gets special mention for being fashionably alone on planet Magnus - but that's all just part of her unique package, isn't it. I love her.
Performance Recaps:
Crystal Bowersox - Long As I Can See The Light, by Creedance Clearwater Revival
Despite an illness that had her in the hospital, but still possessing a potential that Fox found worth waiting a day for, Crystal delivers on being herself. Randy declared that "truth IS reality... you are the truth... you do what you do... I love that girl!" Ellen called her ability "pure, raw, natural talent" and requested that she "please stay healthy because we need you here". Kara congratulated her for "hit[ting] a new level". Simon actually apologized for mis-underestimating her last week and proclaimed that "[like Kelly Clarkson]... we have a really serious artist with you".
Haeley Vaughn - The Climb, by Miley Cyrus
None of the judges liked it; in fact, Randy called it "excruciating". Kara recommended another year of practice. Simon didn't want to make it any worse, but couldn't help himself. Was it as bad as they say? Well, in MONO, it really IS bad. In HD stereo on the right speakers with proper spatial separation, it is pleasant and her voice doesn't crack NEARLY as much as some of the other girls when she hits the top of her range. So perhaps a year of practice on keeping IN range will help.
Lacey Brown -- Kiss Me, by Sixpence None the Richer
I love this song and loved Lacey's performance - but only because it was Lacey, not because it was great. It was Lacey's greatest, but Randy pegged it as Karaoke, Ellen thought it was adorable, Kara "can hear Lacey again" and feels it's a "step in the right direction". Simon compared her to a robot taking orders and dismissed it as "not memorable".
Katie Stevens -- Put Your Records On, by Corrine Bailey Rae
Dont' you love it when the recap (obviously recorded during the rehearsals) are better than the performances. Just saying. Meanwhile, according to Randy, Katie "started pitchy but eventually made it to her sweet spot". Ellen specifically requested that she stop singing "songs that [Ellen] would here in here dentist's office". Kara is "really pulling for [her]" but still very disappointed. Simon recommended "research" to discover the artist she wants to be. Kara recommend singing a song next week that reflects her current state of mind and feelings.
Didi Benami -- Lean on Me, by Bill Withers
Apparently, Didi used to be a Mascot who finally got invited to the cheerleading squad "probably out of pity" (her words). OK, so that explains the awkwardness that takes her so far away from where she COULD be, if she had that true inner self belief. Unfortunately, she doesn't and it showed OH SO MUCH. Ellen praised her voice (it is lovely. That was the only good part. The judges tone was EXTREME disappointment. Didi barely held back tears.
Michelle Delamor -- With Arms Wide Open, by Creed
From Alicia to Creed; this week Michele took
