Welcome to sunny Phoenix Arizona and Season 6 audition show number two.
From the pre-views we can see that Phoenix is going to be full of some amazing talent but at the
same time we can also see that it might be full of some amazing comedy as well. I noticed last
week that we were predominantly presented with the good but it seems like this week we like the
equally presented with the bad buckle up and let's get started.
First we have number 44158 Brandon a.k.a. Shorty and unlikely partner Demetrio a.k.a. biggie
a.k.a. number 44187. Now this is a colorful pair of lockers/poppers from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The
room was full of energy and happiness including laughter. Did they make it? Actually, yes: at
least to the choreography round. And teasers and let's take a break.
Introducing Sasha Mallory, age 21 from Bakersfield, CA (number 45516) who originally auditioned
and got straight through to Vegas in season four. She was still trying to find herself then, so
let's see how she does now. Mallory performs in a white dress and red panties with props of a
white chair and a red rose. Mia Michaels found it to be a really strong solo. Mary Murphy found
it to be quite beautiful and idyllic spread that the panel was quite proud of her and gave her to
get to Vegas.
Other female talent which continue to bring the "sizzle" were:
- 18-year-old Katie Muth (45357) from St. Charles, IL who gave Nigel just what he was
searching for, which was "a performance and technique"
- 21-year-old Ellie Soto (45158) from Mesa, Arizona who gave us a very strong and very dynamic
performance with lots of personality
- 21-year-old Allison Becker (44804) from Keller, Texas who was diagnosed with spinal
meningitis when she was 16 months old and dances despite a hearing impairment by feeling the
music. Apparently, Nigel knows sign language. Mary cry because her cousin also had to overcome
similar challenges and didn't quite make it past the age of 21. Mia Michaels was empathetic and
express that music was a very powerful force for her then asked what it was like for Allison, to
which Allison responded "it's music, as well but it's just... I hear it differently." Allison
then made it to the choreography round.
Add teasers for some incredibly strange auditions and perhaps the best B-boy in So You Think You
Can Dance history and let's take a break.
It is now 4 PM and time to introduce same-sex dance partners Willem de Vries (age 29, West
Hollywood, CA, #44201) and Jacob Jason (age 29, West Hollywood, CA, #44202). Last season Nigel is
not feeling the same sex auditioners, but perhaps this season will be different...
and Mary was proud of the pair; Mia was proud of them for exposing themselves; and Nigel thanked
them for showing that same-sex ballroom could be strong and invited them back for the
choreography round. Auditioner 45244 (Johnathan) brought us some Bollywood, some comedy, some
disco and our first rejection of the episode.
Next the 30 remaining dancers tackle Latin Ballroom as choreographed by season three competitors
Anyer and Pasha. Willem and Jacob got off on the right foot and Allison Becker continued on to do
quite well. Demetrio decided it was outside of his comfort zone and left the competition, leaving
his buddy Brandon and Ballroom buddy number 44083 to go it alone.
Some of the visual stand-outs included numbers 44836 who was partnered with Jacob, 41814 who was
partnered with Willem and 44024 (who wasn't very good) who was partnered with Allison. As it
turns out Brandon got to dance with Demetrio's ex-partner (number 44083) and did not help her
chances with his also not very good performance. Brandon went home. On their way to Vegas
where: Allison, Jacob, Willem, and 12 other lucky dancers. Add some teasers for things are
getting weird in Phoenix and let's take a break.
And... queue number 44043 a.k.a. 18-year-old Jarvis Johnson from Phoenix, Arizona: and yes, the
boy is strange - but obviously talented -- or not. Please Jarvis whatever you do, please learn to
close your mouth when you are dancing. As to the judges, they were mostly speechless, highly
entertained and Mary and Nigel pushed him through to choreography. And I need to add that I
entered that entire segment smiling and laughing; Jarvis does have a great personality. And queue
the teasers including the one where Nigel walks out in disgust and let's take a break.
We return to the strange and up the ante into the weird. Introducing 23-year-old Brandon Gordon
(44952) from Phoenix, Arizona and his dance partner 21-year-old Nicole Peterson (44944) out of
Flagstaff, Arizona. She was wearing a very strange outfit which included a green rugby top and a
pink tutu. They did NOT make it. The strange continued with 44848 who thought he was a wolf,
44508 who thought she was inciting a riot, 4518X who may have broken her shoulder while pulling
it out of its socket, number 56789 who seemed to be still instructing aerobics in the 1980s,
45179 who seemed to forget what he was doing, 44409 who sadly was the saddest mime I have ever
seen and finally a less than awe inspiring top hat routine. Of course all of this was set to the
musical backdrop of the song "People Are Strange". And then the montage continued until we were
luckily reintroduced to quality with 19-year-old Kelsey White (45764) dancing her way out of
Keller, Texas. Unfortunately, even Kelsey it made it to having been abducted by aliens "just
once" which caused Nigel to take a much-needed break but didn't stop her from making it to the
choreography round. Run the teasers and let's take a break.
At this point Mary Murphy and Mia Michaels are totally losing it: they
