ANTM Cycle 13, Episode 5
"Take My Photo, Tyra!"
Who said: "Look at my boob, I'm about to bust out of that dress"?
That is the first sentence spoken in this week's episode. Based on that and the title of the show we'll just have to assume that this episode is all about narcissism. But don't worry, the very next words spoken are "I love seeing my photo... I'm really proud of it... I'm just glad it's in the house to remind me every day of how awesome I am." Like I said, narcissism. And of course, the buxom beauty who is so full of herself is last week's Best Photo winner, 18-year-old Kara.
Jennifer asks Brittany if it was terrifying to be in the bottom two and Erin joins the catfight (Erin versus Brittany) with a statement to the camera of "look how the mighty have fallen". Ashley laments on her own experience in the bottom two and how it has motivated her "to win". Bianca is happy to have not been in the bottom two again [this/last] week.
Tyra mail arrives with the following statement: "Sometimes you only have a minute to make a second impression." Of course, nobody knows what that could possibly mean, so the ladies end up meeting Makeup Artist Sam Fine. Bianca is a fan and has one of his books. 19-year-old Laura gets the do-it-yourself "smoky eye" treatment and the ladies go on to learn valuable lessons about self-preparing oneself for a casting call. The insider tricks: "you only need four great products: concealer, bronzer, mascara and gloss." On the other hand, Erin does not see the point of "all that junk". Day changes into night and the ladies arrive at Wal-Mart where they meet Nigel Barker and his Covergirl spokesmodel wife Chrissy Barker. Laura was blown away by the attractiveness of the couple.
This week's challenge is the "one stop shop Covergirl challenge". The girls get to race through the different departments of the Wal-Mart and the girl that comes out with the most perfect "go see" look will be the winner. Be on the lookout for the Covergirl "Lash Blast Length" product: apparently it flexes to allow your lashes to last all day. They hit clothes, shoes, make up and then the comp-card sections of the store to complete the challenge with the caveat that at each stage there are less items and girls participating. Nigel and Chrissy will only judge the first three girls to complete the challenge. Let the cat fights ensue. The winner receives a photo on the Covergirl page of Wal-Mart.com and a $1000 Wal-Mart gift card provided by Covergirl.
Laura is the first eliminated at the clothing station. Erin starts grabbing and shoving on people so gets some complaints: Sundai versus Erin. Ashley versus Erin. 18-year-old Erin feels justified that she should "race to win not race to be nice". Nicole-ANTM-2009-Cycle-13.cfm' style='font-weight:bold'>Nicole and Jennifer are eliminated at the shoe station. Brittany can't get her shoes on, so she and Rae are the last to arrive at a makeup station. Brittany and Rae get eliminated. Of the remaining girls, Erin grabs an oversized stack of photos from the photo station and then holds the pictures hostage until she finds her own. Then she throws the others into the air to land on the floor. Amazing strategy. Is this America's Next Top Model or Survivor?
Ashley ends the challenge a little ticked off. Sunday wins this challenge with just enough Rosing is on her cheeks and a natural, glowing look. According to Aaron lesson to be learned from this challenge is that "races don't have manners." And then she cries because she doesn't have the emotional security to back up her fighting words.
Surprise! The ladies unraveled an apparent manikin that turns out to be Tyra. Photo shoot creative director Jay Manuel joins Tyra to help the girls work through the photo shoot challenge to acquire the perfect "beauty shot". Tyra lesson: in the fashion industry "beauty shot" simply means a photo focusing only on the face. Surprise X2! The weeks top photo will be determined immediately after the photo shoot and the winner will have immunity from the elimination at the end of the episode; a first for America's Next Top Model. I ask again: Is this Survivor?
Laura goes first and when they add the wind effect Laura comes alive. Sunday is coach to part her lips to avoid the boredom look. Jennifer gets a little too turned on. Then starts faking orgasms. Brittany brings her inner bride of the mummy. Bianca called on Jesus to help her bring more softness to her face but Jesus can't help her. Rae channeled her love for her daughter and almost cried for all the fun she had. Kara brings Tyra's favorite face of the competition and does nothing with it. Erin brings the practical definition of the noun model, but loses points on the noun personality. Nicole-ANTM-2009-Cycle-13.cfm' style='font-weight:bold'>Nicole brings both talent in the hands of Gollum. Ashley goes through three costume changes and believes she finally gets the right one. Brittany wins the best photo award and received an immediate photo shoot with two hot male models, also discovered by Tyra. All of the photos will be featured on the TyraBanks.com website. Erin "[doesn't] think that Brittany should keep winning". I guess that's Erin versus Brittany -in fact let's just face it: Erin is totally conceited.
This week's guest judge is 5'3" petite model China Chow. China has been shot by multiple noted photographers but one has to ask oneself: as a Chinese model isn't she by genetic predisposition going to be on the shorter side anyway? [And considering the global body count of Chinese descent individuals globally, how could she NOT be a successful "petite" model, considering how frequently she would need to be re-used to meet the needs of the target demographic?] Oh well, we're not into this show for the thinking; we're into it for the modeling/photography...
Feedback time:
Brittany steps forward first to receive her "photo of the week"; technically it is referred to as a "gorgeous picture" - which is
